The government is seriously searching into lawsuits of bottled water and packaged foods and drinks being offered at charges higher than the most retail rate, Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan stated on Tuesday.
“Some complaints of bottled water and packaged food and drinks being offered at fees higher than the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) had been received.
“There are provisions within the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 to prevent charging above MRP,” Paswan informed the Lok Sabha in the course of Question Hour.
He additionally said the government is seriously searching into the problem.
Enforcement of the provisions is executed by the Legal Metrology Department of the state governments which impose penalties in case of violations, he introduced.
The minister was responding to a query on whether the government is aware of bottled water and packaged food and drinks being bought at higher expenses than MRP at public places like railway stations, airports, accommodations, and multiplexes.
